5 Traveling Tips Taking Your Dog on Vacation

If your vacation plans include sun, fun and your dog by your side, then you'll need to do a little more planning than just tossing your favorite pooch's food and some water in your car. Here's five travel tips when you're taking man's best friend with you.

1. Keep your dog secured safely inside your car at all times. Make sure they are seated in the back seat with a safety harness while the car is moving. Even though it looks like they are loving life, letting your dog put his or her head out the open window while you drive can be dangerous because flying particles and debris can cause eye damage. So let them stick their head out the window in your driveway, but make sure they are buckled in when it's time to go.

2. Be sure to take your dog to the vet before major travel, especially if your dog is older. This you're your vet can make sure your dog is caught up on all of his or her vaccinations and that you've filled any necessary medication before you travel. It's also a good plan to take a paper copy of your dog's medical history when you travel.

3. Make sure you pup's microchip and ID tags are current. Just because you can't plan for every emergency, you'll want to be sure you dog can be quickly and correctly identified if something does happen and you are separated from your pet.

4. While traveling, be sure to stop often to allow your dog to do their "business," get a drink of water, and stretch their legs. Never leave your dog in a parked car-even if it's just for a few minutes. Temps in the car can quickly rise and you are putting your dog's life at risk by leaving them in the car.

5. Even if your dog travels well short distances, long distances may lead to car sickness. So be prepared by laying down blankets or towels in your car and carrying cleaning supplies, just in case. If your dog does get sick, give the water, fresh air, and a few minutes outside of the car before starting back on your trip.
