5 Summer Driving Safety Tips
Summer is a popular time for road trips, traveling, and more general use of your vehicle (thanks to A/C!). With all the cars on the road comes the need for special summer driving precautions. Read on to find out how you can stay safe with five summer driving tips!
1. Be on the lookout for pedestrians! With the warm weather, more people enjoy walking to and from their destination, or for exercise. You are likely to see lots more people out crossing the street or trotting down the sidewalk. Be aware of people around you, and be sure to yield for those in crosswalks.
3. Periodically inspect your automobile so no surprises arise. Being stranded on the side of a road on a hot summer day would be miserable! Check your tire pressure, fluid levels, air conditioner's performance, and belts and hoses weekly to prevent car malfunctions while driving during the summer. Alternatively, have a car dealership inspect your vehicle for you.
5. Keep an emergency travel kit in your car at all times. This should include items to solve quick vehicle problems as well as things you or your family may need in the car. A first aid kit, bottled water, flashlight, jumper cables, extra windshield washer fluid, map, and jack are all good things to have on hand when driving.
6. Stay informed of local road construction, which is common during the summer. Check the traffic on your route prior to leaving, so you can plan a different route if needed. Also, obey all laws for constructions zones, including changes to speed limits. Pay close attention when driving through the area to avoid an accident.
7. Always check for children in the car! Car interior temperatures rise quickly during summer. In 85 degree weather, it can take just 10 minutes for the inside of a vehicle to reach 110 degrees! Always look in the back seat, and keep a reminder of your kids in the front seat with you.
