How Does Jeep Active Driving Assist Work?

The Active Driving Assist (ADA) feature leverages an array of sensors positioned around the vehicle to monitor the road and nearby traffic, making real-time adjustments as needed. Complementing this advanced system are features like Blindspot Monitoring, Active Lane Management, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Blindspot Monitoring and Active Lane Management work in tandem to keep the vehicle centered in its lane. While the system detects vehicles in your blind spots and provides visual alerts, it also tracks your position within lane markings, issuing warnings through the instrument cluster display and steering wheel vibrations if needed. Adaptive Cruise Control enhances safety by allowing you to set a desired speed and following distance; the vehicle then maintains that speed when conditions are safe and automatically adjusts to maintain the chosen distance from the vehicle ahead. If immediate corrective action isn't taken, the system will gently steer the Grand Cherokee back toward the center of the lane for optimal safety.

How to Activate Jeep Active Driving Assist?

To operate Active Driving Assist (ADA), your hands must stay on the steering wheel while the system is engaged. To turn on ADA, press the button on the right side of the steering wheel that shows a steering wheel icon flanked by two lane lines. On the Grand Cherokee's digital gauge cluster, an ADA display image will appear, showing a steering wheel centered between road lines with bold lines across it. This image will display in white until ADA is fully activated, at which point it will turn green. If Adaptive Cruise Control was already set before ADA was activated, the previously selected speed and following distance will remain unchanged. If Adaptive Cruise Control is not active, it will be initiated when ADA is engaged. Once your preferred speed is reached, press the cruise control set button and adjust the following distance as needed. Each press of the distance setting button will add another line to the ADA display image, indicating the following distance setting.

Where Can I Use Active Driving Assist?

For Active Driving Assist (ADA) to activate, specific conditions need to be met: your hands must remain on the steering wheel, the driver's seat belt must be fastened, lane markings should be visible, the turn signal must not be on, and there must be no trailer connected. It's important to note that ADA should not be used in certain situations, such as during bad weather, in construction zones, in urban areas, or on roads that are poorly maintained. Additionally, ADA does not respond to traffic lights, road signs, or cross traffic, so drivers should stay attentive and aware of their surroundings when using the system. Autonomous driving features like ADA are intended only for use on approved roadways. The good news is that more than 125,000 miles of highways across North America are approved for autonomous driving, with more being added each year.

What is Hands-Free Active Driving Assist?

Hands-Free Active Driving Assist is an advanced version of ADA that allows your Jeep to take control without needing to keep your hands on the steering wheel. However, you must stay attentive and aware of your surroundings. To ensure this, the system uses a camera mounted on the steering wheel along with audio and visual alerts. If the driver fails to return their attention to the road when prompted, the system will require the driver to take control of the wheel. If they don't respond, the vehicle will bring itself to a stop in its current lane and activate an SOS call. Drivers can override this by pressing the gas or brake pedal, holding the steering wheel, and focusing their eyes on the road. Hands-Free ADA requires an active subscription through Uconnect Connected Services, a stable cellular connection to the cloud, and a clear GPS connection to the sky. One added benefit of Hands-Free ADA is autonomous lane-changing capability. Using exterior sensors involved in Blindspot Monitoring and Active Lane Management, the system will identify when it is safe to switch lanes. To initiate a lane change, tap or fully engage the turn signal in the desired direction. An arrow on the corresponding side of the ADA display on the gauge cluster will light up in yellow and switch to green when it is safe to proceed. To cancel the lane change request, tap the turn signal in the opposite direction or unlatch it. If the system judges that changing lanes is safer, it may override the cancellation request. Additionally, Hands-Free ADA uses map data to recognize sharp curves ahead, automatically reducing the vehicle's speed for safe navigation.
