2019 Jeep Cherokee vs 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe near Philadelphia, PA

The 2019 generation has brought a number of great crossover SUVs onto the roadways; two of our top picks in this area are the 2019 Jeep Cherokee and 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, both being top contenders in today's market with great versatility and comfort. Both of these vehicles offer a great number of trim levels with a wide selection of features and powertrains that help each vehicle reliably take you where you need to go. In this review, we will take a deeper look at each of these great SUVs and see which one is overall the best pick. Continue reading on to find out more!

2019 Jeep Cherokee Power & Handling

The powertrain options with the 2019 Cherokee is definitely a highlight for this crossover SUV; we see a number of engines that bring robust power and torque ratings while working with the Cherokee's lighter frame to push out solid fuel economy across the board as well. Coming standard in each base Cherokee is a 2.4-liter Inline-4 Tigershark (180 hp, 171 lb-ft of torque) giving a solid fuel economy of 31 mpg while on the highway. Moving up in the trim level or taking an optional upgrade to Jeep's 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine will give you an additional power boost with 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque. The best powertrain Jeep has to offer is a 2.0-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine that pushes out a solid 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque all while maintaining a solid fuel economy. With this optional powertrain upgrade, the Cherokee can achieve an impressive max tow capacity of 6,200 lbs while on the drive.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Power & Handling

Hyundai offers a couple of different engine options with the Santa Fe starting off with a base 2.4-liter Inline-4 engine compares pretty closely with the Cherokee's powertrain, but doesn't quite hit the mark with a much lower highway fuel economy. The other engine that is offered optionally with the Santa Fe is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that can produce a reasonable 235 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque while on the drive. That being said, this turbocharged engine doesn't quite compare to its competitor, bringing in significantly lower horsepower and torque as well as fuel economy both in the city and while on the highway. The powertrain set with the Santa Fe do well for a passenger vehicle, but the overall power ratings don't quite compare with the Cherokee, especially shown with a significantly lower overall tow capacity at the highest engine level.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Features & Design

Jeep has equipped the 2019 Cherokee with a solid selection of features and package options to help customize your vehicle to fit your interests and needs. With the base Latitude trim you will find a solid fill with features such as height-adjustable front seating, automatic headlights, 60/40-split rear seats, extra storage compartments beneath the front passenger seat, and a full infotainment system housed in a 7-inch touchscreen display with smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Audio, Bluetooth, USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. Jeep brings in a number of additional comforts and convenient features to help add on to your experience with the Latitude Plus, Limited and Overland trim levels. With these trims you will see features added in such as remote engine start with keyless entry, power-adjustable driver's seat with memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, upholstery set upgrades, larger touchscreen display, a power liftgate, rear parking sensors and much more. Well known for its off-road capability, Jeep offers a Trailhawk trim configuration bringing in wider 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, higher ground clearance to more easily clear obstacles, upgraded suspension system, hill climbing assist and other handy features. Each trim level brings a slew of features tapering your experience to where and how you want to drive, and with the great number of optional packages offered by Jeep, you can tune your Cherokee outfitting to specialize your drive.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Features & Design

The base Santa Fe SE trim matches a good number of the features that we see within the Jeep Cherokee including features such as 17-inch wheels, folding rear seats, touchscreen display with Bluetooth and USB ports, cruise control, a rearview camera, air conditioning, and a few others. We were a bit more impressed by the Cherokee however at the standard stock trim, having some more advanced technology such as automatic xenon headlights among others.  As the Santa Fe progresses in trim level it does add in additional features to make up for this, with features such as heated front seats, LED headlights, leather interior trim design, keyless entry and ignition, powered liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror and more. The Santa Fe becomes a much better package once you hit the higher trim levels, but requires you to pay more on average to get to those features than with the Cherokee. We also don't see as many optional packages nor the versatility of the trim levels that we see with the Cherokee, which allows a higher degree of customization and superior off-road capability and towing potential.

Conclusions

We were excited to take a deeper look at the outfitting and capabilities of the 2019 Cherokee and Santa Fe as both are top models featured in today's automotive market. The 2019 Santa Fe brings a great selection of features but misses out on a lot of the versatility that Jeep brings with the 2019 Cherokee, especially in off-road exploration. We also see that the Cherokee has a superior powertrain set, boasting nearly double towing capacity and better fuel efficiency across the board. Overall, we have to give the win here to the 2019 Jeep Cherokee as our favored pick, for its solid powertrain options and deep trim level customization.
